Klezmer is the music that Jewish troubadours used to peddle from one celebration to another, from one "shtetl" (village) to a ghetto, in Eastern Europe, since the Middle Ages.

Rocked in liturgy, inspired by ecstatic Hasidic melodies and secular songs, he slummed in hostels and enriched with theater and folk dances.

In symbiosis with Slavic, Gypsy,   and Ottoman music, he acquired an incomparable diversity and richness of expression. With changing paces, slight dissonance, ornamentation and a touch of improvisation, klezmer encourages spirituality and dancing. It is able to express all emotions,  joy and sadness, meditation, love, or drunkenness, without forgetting the (Jewish!) humor! Torn from Europe by Nazism and Stalinism, he was engrafted to jazz in America before becoming again popular worldwide.

Perpetuating the klezmer tradition without freezing it, HOTEGEZUGT ('sez he!' in Yiddish) was formed and deformed since thanks to a few musicians who love klezmer and Jewish music... It plays a lot of klezmer and Yiddish themes, Israeli and Sephardic songs, and some of its own compositions, all arranged in his own way and sometimes mixed with classical and swing…

Who are we ?

Michel Borzykowski Michel BORZYKOWSKI is born in Geneva (Switzerland) from Jewish Polish parents, survivors of the Shoah. Physician since a long time and music lover since always, he discovered an old saxophone in a cellar and the pleasure to play on it a few years ago! He joined some Jazz bands in Geneva ('Pumpkin quartet', Alain Guyonnet's 'Love and Soda', etc.). Since 1996, he takes up his cultural origins and works mainly on klezmer and other kinds of Jewish music with the bands 'Hotegezugt' 'Rojinkes mit Mandeln', 'Intsvishn', 'Diaspora Blues' and 'Tohu veBohu'. Ex-leader of the workshop 'AMJ Klezmer Band', he is currently the vice-president of  the Association AMJ (Friends of Jewish Music) http://www.amj.ch in Geneva.

PierYNB.jpg (53371 octets) Pier-Yves TETU studied accordion with Denis Croisonier and Andre Thepaz, then at the Conservatory of Chambery (France). Graduate as a tenor at the Conservatories of Grenoble and Nevers (Paul Guigue), he participates in man concerts in France and in Europe with Michel Chapel,  the accordions quartet    'Harmonia' and the singers of 'Evasion'. He also played with the French klezmer band 'Klej'Zema'.

BiancaNB.JPG (49001 octets) Bianca FAVEZ was born in Roumania in 1972. She began to play the violin at five, then studied at the Conservatory of Paris where she got many awards and a virtuosity. Since 1993, she works with Philippe Beran, the Orchestra of the Suisse Romande, the Chamber Orchestra of Genève and the Ensemble Contrechamps, she palys as a soloist in many   festivals (Verbier, Lucerne, Bruxelles, Geneva and Lyon) and teaches the violin at the Academia d'Archi in Geneva. Who could have thought that such a career would make her love to play with a klezmer band?

ChristineNB.jpg (15229 octets) After learning classical piano at the Music Conservatory in Lausanne and at the Jaques Dalcroze School in Geneva, Christine NIGGELER choosed diversity: dance music, church organ, accompanist of singers, composer, musical animator for children, handicaped or elders in institutions, teacher, choir directror (Acratopege), etc. Through traditional music of Eastern Europe and Mediterranea (with the folk band Tamatakia), she quickly joined the klezmer movement, in which she took a complete membership. She often plays as a substitute with Hotegezugt.

David08.jpg (87247 octets) David MORHAIN found his first rhythmic inspiration  on his younger brother's head and on the darbouka he got from his grand-father. Nourished with  rock,he emerged into jazz with the Big Band of the APEJS in Chambery, then refined hese ears and sharpened hese drumsticks  in various jazz clubs. Presently drummer in the Jazz Big Band of Savoie and in the Big Jazz Art, he also deals severly with the band Naima and gets back to hese origins with Hotegezugt!

BERNEYFred2.jpg (80437 octets) Continuously hands-on and self unrepentant, Frédéric BERNEY fell into music in childhood and alert aftermath... Having devoured Wagner, Brassens, The Beatles, Parker and Stravinsky by both ears, having been guitarist, actor, painter and filmmaker, he catches the biggest tool he could find, tames it and begins to improvise: popular songs, symphonic music, jazz and world music... with hot points in Indian and Klezmer music.

AnneCNB.jpg (5128 octets) Anne-Claire MONNIER is born in the past century in a small village in primitive Switzerland. She studied theater with Serge Martin and learned everything she could in many occasions. She's member of Eva Castellino's dance company   "100% Acrylic" and continues with passion her career, featuring as dancer, vocalist, comedian and artistic director in Europe, Canada and Australia. Although yiddish is not precisely her mameloshn, she knows how to make its intonation alive with her extraordinary presence on stage...
