Klezmer is the music that Jewish troubadours used
to peddle from one celebration to another, from one "shtetl" (village)
to a ghetto, in Eastern Europe, since the Middle Ages.
Rocked
in liturgy, inspired by ecstatic Hasidic melodies and secular songs, he
slummed in hostels and enriched with theater and folk dances.
In symbiosis with Slavic, Gypsy, and
Ottoman music, he acquired an incomparable diversity and richness of
expression. With changing paces, slight dissonance, ornamentation and a
touch of improvisation, klezmer encourages spirituality and dancing. It
is able to express all emotions, joy and sadness, meditation,
love, or drunkenness, without forgetting the (Jewish!) humor! Torn from
Europe by Nazism and Stalinism, he was engrafted to jazz in America
before becoming again popular worldwide.
Perpetuating the klezmer tradition without freezing
it, HOTEGEZUGT ('sez he!' in Yiddish) was formed and deformed since
thanks to a few musicians who love klezmer and Jewish music... It plays
a lot of klezmer and Yiddish themes, Israeli and Sephardic songs, and
some of its own compositions, all arranged in his own way and sometimes
mixed with classical and swing…

Continuously
hands-on and self unrepentant,
Frédéric BERNEY fell into music in
childhood and alert aftermath... Having devoured Wagner, Brassens, The
Beatles, Parker and Stravinsky by both ears, having been guitarist,
actor, painter and filmmaker, he catches the biggest tool he could
find, tames it and begins to improvise: popular songs, symphonic music,
jazz and world music... with hot points in Indian and Klezmer music.
